OK...Let's lay some groundwork today!
In my last blog we looked at working out whether you were left or right brain dominant. Why? Well because, of course, if we begin to know our SELF on such intimate levels, not only can we champion our strengths, and we can see what we can do to activate those talents of ours that are as yet undiscovered.
When friends hang out together they develop a close bond. One friend will intuit the other's strengths and challenges and quietly champion and support when needed. They know when to rush in and save the day, or stand and watch a winning game play.
It can be like that with your left and right brains...When you know where the favouritism lies (left or right), you can look at how to become better friends with the 'other side'.
Here are a few tips:
Left-brain predominant people use logic in decision-making. They are detail oriented, facts are important, rules are important, as are the steps to a whole. They are good will analysis (seeing the parts that make up the whole).
Right-brain predominant people find following a rigid office routine particularly stressful. Right-brainer's use their feeling in decision-making. They see the 'Big picture', their imagination rules and they prefer symbols and images. They are good at syntheses (bringing things together to work in harmony). They are more risk taking than their left-brain friends.
When you know where you fit in this picture, you can begin to exercise the side you find the most challenge with and work towards a more holistic (whole) brain response. Imagine how many more tools you will have at your disposal!
SO...
Left-brainers...Try looking at the big picture more often....imagine a few wild possibilities that are different your usual style. Try to feel how the other person is responding to you. Right-brained people are more emotionally expressive and intuitive. The right-brain tells them when something 'feels' right. When you go on vacation, try to 'go with the flow' and let spontaneous things happen without planning it before.
Right-brainers...Become more detailed. With any new proposals, try mapping out the steps concisely and in a logical way. Challenge your mind with new ideas, like learning a foreign language or doing word puzzles or brainteasers. Try to see the linear sequence of events or steps rather than just focusing on the 'whole picture'. When you go on vacation, try planning it in some detail so you know what you will be doing.
Doing these exercises will definitely help your communication skills when you need to collaborate with a person who functions using the opposite brain preference to you. You will be able to find 'common ground' more completely.
This will activate your future self now!
